Header image | Placeholders: Introduction to Document VariablesDocument variables – as the name suggests are placeholders which relate specifically to the document.

They are not used in Compile … which, as explained in the List of All Placeholders, means they cannot be used in headers or footers as these are set up within compile.

There are so many of these Document Variables, I’m going to split them into groups so we can digest them more easily. By now you should be familiar with the ‘shape’ of a placeholder.

  • The <$ … > format
  • The use of words/codes to replace the … in the tag word.

To make best use of the document variables, it’s now a case of knowing where to include them and where Scrivener will find the values to replace your placeholders when it’s time to compile.

The first group all relate to the ‘title’ of your manuscript and will be the topic of the next blog post.

The next group all concern metadata. (They will be the one after next.)

Some more are related to dates and times. (You got it …)

That leaves us with only three ‘odd’ ones. This one …
